Mysterious Contests

‘I find the contest, you write the entry.’ One of the authors I adored as a child wasn’t Tolkien, Blyton, or Lewis – it was Agatha Christie. In fact my parents still call her Agappa Crispie thanks to my childish pronunciation of her name. I just couldn’t get enough of her country house plot-twists, fiendish villains in exotic locations, and last minute accusations by moustached detectives. Fortunately for mystery writers, that lure is still strong for modern readers and crime/thriller/mystery books regularly top the best-seller lists. But if you’re just starting out in the genre it can be helpful to enter some writing contests tailored to this style of writing as your bourbon-drinking, bike-riding detective may not be welcome in mainstream literary contests. I’ve gathered a few in my list below and I’m sure you can use your sleuthing skills to find some more! In other news this month…it’s a New Year! I hope you all have a productive 2006 and your mail-box is stuffed with acceptances and contest prizes. Perhaps you can squeeze in one more resolution? How about “I will enter five writing contests this year?” By the way – it was the butler with the candlestick in the library. Don’t forget to scroll down for my list of next month’s contests – there are 21 of them awaiting your entries. Happy Writing!
